As an artist it is important for you to keep informed about what the market is up to and where you fit in. Develop a strategy that will allow you to keep abreast of current trends and events. Subscribe to magazines that appeal to you. Subscribe to online newsletters that let you know what is happening in your area. Get yourself on as many social networking sites as you can. Here is a partial list of sites and magazines to get you started:

Somerset Studios: geared towards artists with a crafter’s touch. Publishes several different magazines that cover numerous fields in which these styles apply (artist’s books, blogging, housewares, digital arts, collage, and more).

Communication Arts: excellent for designers and illustrators. Offers a great deal of insight and opportunities for artists working in these areas.

CMYK: Advertising, design, illustration, photography.

AIGA: website for those working in graphic arts. “Connections, resources, savings, education, and recognition”.

ArtSlant: great social networking site for artists of all trades. A great way to establish an online presence and connect with other artists, curators, and collectors.

Sour Harvest: website (connected to Thinkspace Gallery) that covers what’s happening in the Los Angeles art scene.

Flickr: great social networking site for artists of all trades. A great way to establish an online presence and connect with other artists, curators, and collectors.

Juxtapoz: geared towards pop culture (toys, graffiti art, pop surrealism). Follows select galleries that carry these styles (mostly in Los Angeles and New York). Friendly to emerging artists.

Blue Canvas: Embraces a new generation of artists, illustrators, designers, and photographers (very much rooted on pop culture and illustration)

Art in America: excellent for gallery listings.

Art News: Appeals to “fine art” (painting and installation art; muralists, abstract, modern, realism). Geared towards collectors; offers valuable information for artists regarding grants and galleries.

Color: for collectors of fine art photography.

Aperture: high end photography magazine. Great for inspiration and keeping up to date on what the market is up to.

PDN: (photo district news) great for news, techniques, and inspiration.

Advanced Photoshop: filled with all kinds of information and inspiration to those who are working extensively with Photoshop.
